Overview
Coffee Bay Point is a right-hand point that breaks off the southern headland of the arcing Coffee Bay, peeling over a rock ledge and sand. It's a fairly slow wall that sheds a lot of size and power out of big southwest-to-south swells, though every now and then it lines up cleanly over the inside sandbar.
When It Works
The point needs either smaller east swells or bigger south swells to reform across the shelf and sand bottom. It draws swell from east through south to southwest, with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency is on the patchy side, so plan on catching it when the setup lines up rather than any given day.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. The point can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly, beginner-suitable wave, and the lineup only gets busy over the December-January holidays; the rest of the year expect a moderate crowd. If it isn't firing, there are options around the headland: Mbomvu, a rare right-hand rivermouth, and White Clay, an average beachbreak that picks up most of the available swell. Further down the cliffs, Majutt Point is a serious right that comes alive in east swells.
