Colorado Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Colorado is a river-mouth beachbreak on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, breaking over sandbars that the river keeps constantly replenished. It's regarded as one of the country's best beachbreaks when it comes together, throwing fast, hollow barrels with both lefts and rights on offer. The rights tend to be the hollower of the two, while the lefts run racey and rippable. The peak can shift around, which helps spread surfers across a few different takeoff spots.

When It Works

The sandbars draw swell from south through west, with west (W) the optimal direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and once it pushes much bigger it tends to wall up and close out. The best waves run from just north of the river mouth to right in front of it, since the south side usually walls out. Expect moderately consistent surf, with worthwhile windows through spring, summer, and autumn when the setup lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, which blows straight offshore here, though calm or light offshore from north to east works too. Nicaragua's steady offshore flow can occasionally blow a little too hard. The bank works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call and mid tides generally holding the cleanest, hollowest shape. Very high tides can get backwashy, and low tides can drain out.

Local Tips

This is a shortboard wave that suits intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, though the several peaks help spread the crowd out. The impact zone is shallow, so a wipeout can put you on the sandbar hard, and getting caught inside on a bigger set is a real possibility. Shuffle your feet on the way out to avoid stingrays, and watch for river debris after heavy rains.

Access

Staying at the neighbouring Hacienda Iguana gives the easiest access. Otherwise you'll need to boat in or hike in, and parking nearby is restricted.
