Costa Caparica Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Costa Caparica is a 30 km strip of beachbreak stretching south of the Tejo River, and it's the most consistent zone for Lisbon's surfers. The northern end is built up, where a run of jetties adds variety and helps stabilise the sandbars. Waves break over sand and peel both left and right. For low-tide lefts, look to Covo do Vapor and Rio along with the seven jetties known as CDS; further south, Praia da Rainha offers an average, open beachbreak.

When It Works

The beaches draw swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with northwest (NW) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there's scope on both small days and bigger ones.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. The banks work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is friendly terrain for beginners, and the spread of banks gives plenty of options for finding a peak. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, with a local crew at Vapor, and keep an eye out for rip currents along the strip.

Access

There's a full setup on shore, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, camping, and both a surf school and surf shop close by. Parking comes as a car park, paid parking, and roadside spots, so factor in the parking charges. Water quality can be poor here, so be aware the stretch is prone to pollution.
