Costa da Caparica Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Costa da Caparica is a huge stretch of beach break just south of Lisbon and a long-time favourite of the city's surf community. Along the northern end, regular groynes trap sand and shape reliable banks, so the beach holds a run of quality lefts and rights. Waves range from long, walling top-to-bottom lines to short, hollow ones, with the odd barrel, and it can turn heavy when the swell is up. It is also a regular contest venue.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and the bigger northwest or west swells bring out its best. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving plenty of range from waist-high days up to double overhead. The sandbars that build around the groynes are what produce those long, ripable walls. Autumn, winter and spring are the prime months, roughly September to May.

Wind and Tide

Look for offshore wind out of the northeast (NE), with a workable wind window running from north-northeast to east (NNE-E). It breaks across low, mid and high tide, so you can surf through most of the tide, though a rising tide is the better call and high tide is best.

Local Tips

The beach suits everyone from beginners to experts and takes any board, whether that's a shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, SUP or bodyboard. Each section has its own committed crew, so expect a moderately busy lineup around the groynes, with plenty of room to spread out. The atmosphere is generally easygoing. Head further south and the crowds thin out and the water quality improves.

Access

There are regular car parks right by the beaches. The main hazards are the rips that run alongside the groynes, though those same channels also make it easier to paddle into the lineup. It gets noticeably rippy once the swell is big.
