Cox Bay - Vancouver Island surf guide

Cox Bay is a popular surf spot located on Vancouver Island, close to Tofino. This crescent-shaped beach features tapering walls, making it an inviting place for surfers of different skill levels. The beach is quite spacious, so thereโ€™s usually enough room for everyone, though weekends and summer months can get a bit crowded. It's also a regular contest site, adding to its surf culture vibe.

The surf here works best with west and southwest swells, typically handling wave sizes from about 1ft to 4ft (0.3m to 1.2m). The beach offers both left and right-breaking waves, and most of the action happens in the middle section, where you can catch some decent peaks. The waves can be a bit shifty at times, especially when they're over 6ft, but surprises do happen. For the best experience, aim for incoming tides, whether low, mid, or high. Wind from the east is usually preferable, making for nice glassy conditions. Both beginners and more seasoned surfers can find their groove here, and the sandy bottom makes for a comfortable ride.

Access to Cox Bay is straightforward, meaning you can easily grab your board and hit the surf. You'll find a good local vibe, with everyone generally stoked to be out in the water. Just keep in mind that it can get pretty packed during busy times. There are no major hazards to worry about, so you can focus on enjoying your time in the waves!
