Overview
Doheny State Beach is a gentle reef break that has long been a first-wave spot for beginners and longboarders. Swells filter in and break softly over a bed of cobblestones and sand, forming slow, forgiving shoulders that peel both left and right. It won't stand out for quality, but it's dependable and easy to surf.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south to southwest, with south (S) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft, roughly waist- to head-high. Expect consistent surf through spring, summer, and autumn.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind to clean it up. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Keep an eye out for exposed rocks at low tide.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly wave that suits a fish, funboard, or longboard. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, and the vibe can feel a little reserved.
Access
There's a car park with paid parking, plus restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and camping on site. Water quality is often poor and gets especially bad after rain, so stay out of the water for up to 72 hours following a storm.
