Overview
Doonbeg Castle is a sweet, hollow left-hand reef that peels over a rock ledge in a sublime setting beneath a ruined castle.
When It Works
The bay only comes alive on a big northwest swell, one large enough to close out the rest of the coast before it can push in. It draws swell from west to northwest, with northwest (NW) the best direction, and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. The reef is shallow and gets rippy once there is real size in the water.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind. It breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Access
Park by the slipway, where you will find free roadside parking. There is camping too if you want to stay close.
