Overview
Dorothy's is a long left-hand pointbreak that wraps along the rocky southern headland in Liberia, also known as Mamba Point or Poopy Point. It takes its most respectful name from Dorothy, an elderly woman who has run an orphanage and school on the point for years. The wave peels over a sandy rock bottom and runs a fair distance when there's enough swell wrapping in, with real power close to the pocket and tapered shoulders that open up for long, drawn-out cutbacks.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and it's at its best on a southwest (SW) swell wrapping into the headland. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft; when it's too small the wall sections off and pushes uncomfortably close to the rocks. Consistency is a little hit-or-miss, so it pays to catch it when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean it up. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level wave, and the lineup stays quiet when it's on. Water quality is poor here, so keep your mouth shut in the water.
Access
Park at the orphanage and leave some small change for the kids. From there, pick your way across the rocks at the top of the point for a dicey but often dry paddle out, where sure-footedness and timing matter because it can get hectic. There's both free and paid parking.
