Surfing in Montserrado

Montserrado is Liberia's capital county, where Monrovia's Atlantic-facing coastline gathers south and west swells across a compact but varied set of breaks. All five spots sit in and around Monrovia, so a surf trip here is easy to base in one place while sampling different setups within a short drive.

The coast works best on swell from the south through the west, with the most reliable energy arriving on south, south-southwest, southwest, west, and west-southwest lines; a few breaks also pick up more northwesterly angles. Most spots come alive from around chest-high and hold size up to roughly head-and-a-half, giving a workable window rather than demanding a big, rare swell. Tides are forgiving, with waves breaking across low, mid, and high, so timing a session is less of a guessing game.

Surfing in Montserrado spans two main flavors. There's a mellow, sand-bottom beach break that suits beginners, holding size up to around six feet and offering gentler, more forgiving waves. Alongside it sits a punchier point that breaks over boulders and sand, favoring intermediate surfers who want more shape and a longer wall; it prefers lower to mid tide and a touch more swell to get going. Notable spots include Bernard Beach, Coopers Beach, and Dorothy's, which give a good sense of the range on offer.

Wind matters as much as swell here. The beach break handles a northeasterly, while the point tends to clean up on a southeasterly, so it's worth checking the morning wind direction before committing to a zone.

For a first trip, the beach break is the natural starting point, with the point as a step up once you're comfortable and the swell has some push. Water stays warm year-round, so boardshorts and a light top are plenty. Overall, Montserrado offers an approachable stretch of West African coast with enough variety between forgiving beach waves and a sharper point to keep improving surfers busy.
