Overview
Dunes is a reef break on Puerto Rico's north coast, in the Isabela area that has drawn surfers away from the busier scene around Rincon. It breaks over an uneven, fairly shallow reef and peels both left and right, with nice sandy beaches behind the lineup. Sitting right next to the popular and often crowded Middles, it's one of the quieter reefs in the area, and there are more waves further west at Golondrinas.
When It Works
Dunes draws swell from northwest through northeast, with a northeast swell the best match. The wave is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's a consistent spot that picks up swell reliably.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup, one of the reasons it stands out among the more crowded breaks nearby.
