Middles surf guide

Middles is a popular surf spot located on the north coast of Isabela, Puerto Rico. Known for its powerful waves and beautiful surroundings, it has gained a solid reputation among surfers. The beach is easily accessible as the coast road runs right alongside it. With crowds always gathering for a chance to ride its waves, Middles can get pretty busy, especially when the conditions are just right.

The wave at Middles breaks primarily to the right, delivering a shallow, bowly tube that's perfect for shortboarders and bodyboarders alike. The optimal swell direction is northeast, but it can also handle waves coming from the northwest and east. Swell sizes range from around 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 12 feet (3.7 meters), with the reef providing an exciting challenge. When the wave is small, it can still pack a punch, and higher tides, especially during autumn and winter seasons, add to the intensity. Keep an eye on the wind as south winds are preferable to keep the waves clean, and tackling this spot is best left to intermediate surfers due to the fast and steep nature of the breaks.

During your session, be aware of the uneven reef and potential hazards, like urchins. The surf environment can vary from really intense to a bit more mellow depending on the day and conditions. With its consistent swells, especially during late summer and fall, Middles remains a go-to spot for those looking to score some impressive waves and enjoy a vibrant surf scene.
