Overview
El Barco is a reef break in Salinas that peels both left and right over an uneven reef. It takes its name from a long-dissolved shipwreck that once sat on the reef. The break gets shallow but stays fun and ripable for all sorts of surfcraft.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best direction, and it comes alive when a north or big southwest swell wraps around the promontory. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so it pays to time your sessions for when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for south offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Higher tide is when the rights come into play, while the lefts run throughout.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a busy lineup when it's on.
Access
There's a mix of free, paid, roadside, and restricted parking around the spot. To line it up, head to San Lorenzo and look east from Miramar.
