El Coco is a sandy beach break with both lefts and rights, backed by a wildlife refuge that makes for a beautiful setting. It doesn't have the wave quality of Hermosa or Yanke to the north, but it tends to run smaller and more manageable, and it sees far fewer surfers. With gentle, forgiving waves, it's a solid choice for people learning to surf.
When It Works
The beach breaks over sand and draws swell from the south through southwest, with west (W) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it's moderately consistent, so you'll find rideable windows fairly regularly without it being on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. El Coco works around mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, and the mellow waves suit surfers still finding their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Getting here is easy since the main road meets the coast, and you'll find free roadside parking right by the beach.
