Overview
El Colegio is a reef peak that faces the school's stadium, breaking both left and right over an uneven reef. It stays user-friendly when the wind is offshore, which makes it more approachable than the heavier waves to the north and a good option for improvers and intermediates. If you want something mellower, there are smaller, more protected waves to the south towards the rivermouth. Beyond the harbour sits Big Sister, a hefty big-wave slab that throws up crushing A-frames on a big swell with no wind.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from south through west, with a southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is moderately consistent, so you can count on rideable windows without it turning on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet when it's working.
Access
There's a lifeguard on hand, and you'll find free roadside parking nearby.
