Overview
El Cuco sits at a tiny village that was abandoned during the civil war and is now home to several surf camps. The beachbreak breaks over sand and peels both left and right. It is often slow and mushy, and that easy-going character makes it a welcoming place to surf.
When It Works
El Cuco is a consistent beachbreak that draws swell from southwest through southeast, with a south swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind. The break comes in across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. It is especially good at high tide with a 4 ft (1.2 m) swell running, while low tide can bring some faster waves, though the nearby point will be the better option then.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly spot, and longboarders and beginners make up most of the crowd. Expect things to stay fairly quiet when it works.
