Overview
El Frontón has only a few rivals for the title of heaviest wave in the world. This is a total slab, breaking over uneven reef and throwing square, mutant tubes that shut down quickly on the shelf. It peels both ways, with the right the more perfect option and the left every bit as serious depending on the swell direction. The wave is a genuine natural spectacle, and for most people the smart move is to experience it from land.
When It Works
The slab draws swell from west through north, and a west swell is the best match. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it needs proper size before it comes to life.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind. Mid tide is the window to aim for, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave, ridden almost exclusively by local bodyboarders who do not tolerate visitors. Localism is extreme, mistakes are paid for dearly, and the spot is simply not recommended for non-locals. If you are not part of that crew, treat El Frontón as a wave to watch, not to ride.
Access
El Frontón sits just east of La Guancha, with restricted parking in the area. The cliff top and the rocks offer a front-row view of the action. Be aware that nearby banana plantations discharge water containing fertilizer residue.
