El Paraiso is a punchy Mexican beachbreak on a ribbon of black sand between lush fields, just across the rivermouth from its more famous neighbour, Pascuales. A bend in the beach lines up triangular sandbars that throw fast, hollow, yet surprisingly forgiving waves, and while it rarely gets as perfect as Pascuales, it has no shortage of pumping days. The main wave sits right in town: a shallow, sucking beachbreak with both lefts and rights, the rights often carrying a bit more shoulder. It is a hot, humid village largely overlooked by tourists, which makes it a great place to grab a cheap meal and trade waves with the local surfers and bodyboarders.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, running anywhere from chest high to triple overhead, so there is plenty on offer for surfers who want to skip the biggest stuff as well as days that pack a real punch. Conditions are moderately consistent, and the season runs March through October across spring, summer, and autumn. Intermediates will struggle once it gets big.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, the classic pairing with a southwest swell here. The beachbreak can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Catch it early, though, before the wind comes up.
Local Tips
This is shortboard and bodyboard territory, and it also suits bodysurfing or a gun when the size is up. It is best suited to intermediate surfers. The main break in town gets congested when it is on, but the peaks scattered up and down the beach stay far quieter. The lineup is somewhat reserved, and local surfers and bodyboarders appreciate humility and respect. The bottom is shallow sand with scattered rocks, so mind the sucking sections. If you wander down the beach early, bring shoes or flip-flops, because the black sand will fry your feet by the time you paddle back in.
