El Picacho surf guide

El Picacho is a surf spot that demands respect and skill. It's known for its hollow and powerful waves that can deliver some serious barrels. The paddle out can be tough, so make sure you're ready for a workout before you hit the surf. This isn’t a spot for beginners; it’s more suited for those with plenty of experience under their belt.

The waves here work best with overhead swells, particularly from the east direction. You can expect solid swells of around 6 feet (about 1.8 meters) to make for good sessions. The surf breaks over an uneven reef and sand, creating a mix of left and right-hand waves. The conditions can get heavy, especially in the impact zone, so positioning is really important. Low to mid tide is generally the best time to catch the waves here, and keep an eye on the wind – a south wind is usually preferred.

This spot is popular with bodyboarders, though it's known to have low consistency, so you may need to be patient for the right conditions. El Picacho is best enjoyed by experienced surfers who can navigate the challenges it presents. If you're up for it, there's a good chance to score some thrilling rides, but just be aware that it’s not an everyday surf spot.
