Overview
El Silencio is a right-hand reef that breaks inside the northern headland of a rocky cove, over a mix of sharp boulders and sand. The right is variable and can break in a disorganised way, sucking up over the boulders before fattening out on the shoulder and shutting down on the sandier inside. There are also some lefts at the southern end of the cove and around the headland towards Pulpos at La Timba.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and a northwest (NW) swell is the best match. It comes to life in moderate south swells, and better still in west-northwest ones, working from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It's moderately consistent, but the right tends to be disorganised, so expect to sit and pick through it for the better waves.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. Mid tide is best, with a rising tide generally the better call. Rocks pop up at low tide, so it pays to keep off the bottom of the tide.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. The lineup stays fairly quiet, since there are better waves further south, though it draws bodyboarders when it's on. Watch for rips and for urchins among the boulders.
Access
You'll find restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard here. For parking there's a car park with free parking, plus paid and roadside options.
