Overview
Enggano is a left-hand reef break off a remote, almost desert-like island, peeling over dead coral. It sits well off the beaten path and turns up a range of waves across most wind and swell directions, which makes it a natural stop for boats working their way up from Java toward the Mentawais.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, and a southwest swell is the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's a wide band of rideable size to play with. Consistency is moderate, so it won't be on every day, but the window is worth timing.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean it up. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet.
