Overview
Factory Point is a left-hand reef break at the very end of a remote point near Cape Cross, breaking over uneven reef in front of a slaughterhouse that gives it both its name and, fair warning, its smell. It's the last of three sections along the point, after Main Break and Graveyards, and it isn't as good as either of them.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west, with southwest the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. The reef works on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Access
Getting here is a mission: a long 130 km (80 mi) drive along salt roads from Swakopmund out to the Fur Seal Reserve at Cape Cross. There's a fee of $1.50 per person and $1.50 per car, and park officials aren't especially fond of surfers, so play by the rules to keep the spot open. The nearest campsite is very basic, about 40 km (25 mi) to the south at the mile 72 marker post, and there's a small restaurant at the seal factory.
