Overview
FAE is a very consistent left point that peels off the headland over an uneven reef, backed up by some strong, hollow beachbreak peaks. It is reliable enough to host competitions. Down the long Mar Bravo beach toward Punta Carneros, good sandbars set up and pull in Salinas locals and bodyboarders.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW) and comes alive on a small to moderate southwest (SW) swell, turning hectic once it jumps too big. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and as a consistent break it rarely goes flat when there is swell in the water.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to groom the wall. The point can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and the hollow sections over reef reward surfers who already know what they are doing. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it is on, and keep an eye out for the sea lions in the water. If FAE is not delivering, La Chueca is another nearby spot worth a look.
Access
Park with the tourists at Chocolatera after driving through the naval base. Parking is free, with a mix of roadside and restricted spots.
