Fagamalo is a coral reef setup on the north coast of Samoa, breaking both left and right over live coral. It sits at the start of a long stretch of reef running from Fagamalo to Sasina before the shoreline turns to rocky lava, with coral returning further along at Asau. Along this coast there are at least a dozen named waves, from easy left walls to Sunset-style, big-swell rights, and the swell direction on the day decides which of them comes to life.
When It Works
The reef is at its best on a north (N) swell and draws surf across a window from northwest through to northeast (NW-NE). It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's scope from smaller days right up to serious size. Expect moderately consistent surf, with enough rideable days to make the trip worthwhile when the direction lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, best suited to surfers comfortable sitting on a coral reef. Being a 1.5-hour-plus drive from the south coast keeps the numbers down, so expect a fairly quiet lineup even when it's on.
Access
Most of the waves along this stretch are paddle accessible from land, though be ready for a long paddle out.
