Overview
Salailua is a left-hand reef break over live coral, with a deep channel running alongside its manageable walls. It has a fun, intermediate-friendly character and comes into its own once the surf reaches around head height.
When It Works
The reef picks up swell from southwest through southeast, and a south (S) swell is the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving you rideable surf from small days up through solid head-high conditions. The lefts sharpen up when there's more south in the swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the lefts hold up better than most when there's some southeast wind about.
Local Tips
Salailua suits intermediate surfers, especially in the head-high range. If you want more options, there are extra waves to be found around nearby Satuiatua.
