Overview
Fences is the main section of an incredibly long, south-facing line of rocks and sand that can join hands into kilometre-long rides. This right-hand point breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand. The first Point section can break hollow and fast before settling into a rhythm of snap and cutback through Fences and on to the Cabin end section. How much you add to the length of the ride depends on the sand and the swell direction.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west (S-W), with a southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's a wide window to catch it once a swell fills in. Conditions are moderately consistent, and the wave holds good quality when it lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. It breaks on mid and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for expert surfers only. The lineup stays fairly quiet, so you're unlikely to be scrapping for waves when it's on.
Access
From Wanganui, head north on London Street, Great North Road and State Highway 3. At Waitotara, turn left onto Trent Street, continue onto Ihupuku Street and Waiinu Beach Road, and drop down to Waiinu Beach. From there, either take the track east about 1 km along the beach or walk in. If you drive down the track, shut the farm gates behind you; otherwise walk from Waiinu Beach. Parking is free, with roadside spots available.
