Frigates Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Frigates is a world-class left that breaks over live coral on a mid-ocean barrier reef, some 22 km / 14 mi from land. Often mentioned in the same breath as Cloudbreak, it handles a huge span of sizes and turns thick, bowly, fast and hollow when it's on. The standout is the inside "Bowl" section, where swell lines bend and leap over a knuckle of coral to throw frightening barrels. This is expert-only territory, and the ride can run long.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and it's a very swell-sensitive wave. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, a wide window that runs from small days up to genuinely huge. Up to around 6 ft it stays more manageable, with wrapping hollow walls; push into bigger swell and the inside Bowl serves up serious, unpredictable barrels. It's a consistent spot, so it's often worth a look.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean up the face, which can otherwise get chopped and make the roll-in much harder. Northeast is fine on the outside, while southeast blows dead offshore on the inside benders. It can work through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. High tide improves makeability, especially on the inside section, which dredges over shallow coral at low.

Local Tips

Frigates is strictly for experienced surfers who are comfortable on a fast, hollow reef a long way from shore. Expect a moderately busy lineup when the camp boats gather, though the length of the wave helps spread everyone out. Be wary of pushing too far on the inside; rips, sharks, coral and relentless sun are all part of the deal out here.

Access

The break sits well offshore, so most surfers stay at the couple of surf camps on nearby Yanutha Island, roughly halfway back to Viti Levu, and reach the reef by boat.
