Overview
Giardini Naxos breaks both left and right off the rocks along this stretch of the Sicilian coast, with a scattering of extra peaks and some good lefts over a sand bottom. Another rocky left reels further down the beach in front of the church, so there is more than one option once you know where to look.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), and it comes into its own on southeast (SE) swell. Any east swell can get it going, and it will still break even when the wind turns onshore. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, covering small days as well as bigger, more powerful swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, but keep an eye out for possible currents while you are in the water. It is mostly surfed on weekends, so expect more company in the lineup then.
Access
Leave the A18 (Catania to Messina) at Giardini Naxos and follow the road down to the sea; the spot is right in front of the Post Office. There is free parking along the roadside, and the Not Only Surf shop (0942 576026) is a handy local contact.
