Gongs is an outside reef peak that breaks over uneven reef and sand, sitting 17 km south of Hualien at the end of a long run of sandy shoredump and rocky coast. The peak throws both lefts and rights and can handle a bit of size when a swell shows up.
When It Works
It draws swell from northeast through southeast, with a northeast (NE) swell the best match. The peak is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving it plenty of working range once a swell fills in. The main catch is consistency: waves here can be somewhat inconsistent, so it rewards patience and good timing.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. It breaks on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly wave, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet. When it's big, paddle out from the harbour jetty and plan your exit well away from the tetrapods lining the shore in front of the peak.
Access
Gongs sits beside a county park at the harbour, with a car park and free parking. You'll also find restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, and a surf shop.
