Surfing in Taiwan

Surfing in Taiwan centers on a mostly east-facing island where beach breaks over sand carry the bulk of the wave-riding, wrapped around scattered points, reefs, and the odd river mouth. Most spots sit along the Pacific coast and open up to swell from the northeast through east and southeast, so surfers here watch that window closely and weigh it against wind, tide, and each spot's character before choosing where to paddle out. Waves tend to break through most of the tide, with the mid to lower range working most reliably, and sizes run from knee-high on the smallest days up to well overhead when a strong pulse arrives.

The east and northeast coasts hold the most variety. In New Taipei City, sandy beginner beaches like Baishawan, Jin Shan, and Fulong Beach face north and northeast and clean up on southwest wind. Further down in Yilan, Dashi and Wushi are gentle beach breaks that suit beginners and favor a northwest wind, while Hualien mixes beaches with a reef across Jici Beach, Fongbin, and Gongs, generally an intermediate stretch. Taitung brings the island's punchier end of the spectrum, where Bashien Dong, Cheng Gong, and Donghe Rivermouth include points and step up toward advanced surfing.

The south and outlying areas read as narrower, spot-specific examples rather than a broad regional rule. Pingtung, near the island's southern tip, holds the reef and river-mouth setups of Jialeshui and Nanwan, both intermediate and tuned to southeast swell. Single-spot areas fill out the map: Chu Nan in Miaoli and Sanshuei on Penghu are beginner beach breaks, while Sunyatsen Beach in Kaohsiung City is an intermediate beach that, unusually for the island, looks west for its swell.

Taiwan's cleanest surf traditionally arrives with the autumn typhoon season, when distant storms send long-period energy toward the east coast, and the winter northeast monsoon keeps the Pacific-facing shores active through the colder months. With beginner and intermediate spots making up the vast majority of the island's breaks, it is an approachable place to learn or progress, while the reefs and points give more experienced surfers something to chase once the swell lines up.
