Grindavík is a surf spot located on the southwestern coast of Iceland. It’s known for its rugged coastline and unique surf conditions. When the swell picks up, especially above 3ft (0.9 meters), things can get intense. Big waves can cause heavy water conditions with crunching barrels forming over the uneven reef, and it's crucial to be cautious of the shallow spots at low tide. Optimal wind direction comes from the north, and any swell does best around low to mid tide, but it can also handle high tide without too much trouble. This spot is more suited for expert surfers due to its steep take-offs and less-than-perfect faces when conditions aren’t just right.
Getting to Grindavík is pretty straightforward; just drive straight through the town until the road ends. Then, take a right and head up the coast for a couple of minutes, and you’ll arrive. Keep in mind, while it’s one of the more reliable spots, it can get messy quickly because of its exposure. So don’t be surprised if the waves aren’t perfectly clean all the time.
