Sandvik surf guide

Sandvik is one of the main surf spots on Reykjanes, known for its impressive beachbreak. This spot gets a good amount of swell, thanks to its location, and it can really pack a punch with heavy currents, especially when the waves get some size. Generally, the waves will peel way out the back before breaking closer to the shore, which can be fun but also challenging. You’ll notice some nice tapering peaks, providing opportunities on both left and right waves, but be ready for a tough paddle out when it’s firing.

The best swell direction for Sandvik is from the west, but it also picks up swells coming from the southwest and northwest. It can handle swell sizes starting at about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and is a beach break over sand, making it a bit more forgiving than rocky spots. While it’s a good spot for intermediate surfers, it’s worth noting that conditions can get tricky with the currents, so be prepared for that. The optimal wind is coming from the east, and the waves break best during low to mid tide.

Access to the beach is easier if you have a 4x4 since you can drive along some dirt tracks to reach the sand. The setting is pretty stunning, with a beautiful sandy beach surrounded by unique lava formations. Plus, it’s interesting to note that the European and North American tectonic plates meet right at the north end of this beach, adding a little geological flair to your surfing experience.
