Overview
Guarda do Embau is a laid-back resort town built around a lefthander that ranks as the best rivermouth wave in Brazil. Steep peaks form off the point and run down the changeable sandbars, mixing wall and tube sections along the way. Even when the river isn't turning on the goods, you still have a punchy beachbreak set among some amazing rock formations, plus a right on the other side of the point.
When It Works
The main draw is a consistent, good-quality left that breaks over sand. It picks up swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), and southeast (SE) is the direction that lines it up best. The wave works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's a wide window to catch it. Autumn and winter are the seasons to aim for.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind to clean it up, with a workable wind window running from west-northwest to north-northwest (WNW-NNW). It can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave that rewards a shortboard. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on, and be ready for it to get very crowded on the standout days.
Access
The town has restrooms, camping, a surf school, and a surf shop. For parking, there's a car park with free parking along with roadside spots.
