Hammond's is a classic right-hand cobblestone reefbreak in the town of Montecito. It's a well-shaped, lined-up wave with a few punchy sections and the occasional left, breaking over boulders and sand. On a good day it holds considerable size and keeps delivering classic rides.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with west swell the best match. Clean west swells are the standard call, and big south swells also find their way in, a welcome respite during the long, flat Santa Barbara summers. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and is moderately consistent, so it takes the right setup to line up but rewards you when it does.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean things up. The reef works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a fun wave for intermediate surfers. Expect a very busy lineup whenever it's working.
Access
Reach the break by walking up from the small Miramar Beach/Eucalyptus Lane area, where you'll find free roadside parking.
