Harvey Cedars surf guide

Harvey Cedars is a surf spot located on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. It stretches from Barnegat Lighthouse State Park through Loveladies to Northbeach. This area features a good number of beach breaks that are known for their strength, especially when the conditions align just right. It’s not as crowded as other spots since surfers often have other options close by, making it a decent place to catch some waves without too much competition.

The surf at Harvey Cedars works best with a NorthEast, South swell and handles sizes starting from 2ft (0.6m). Waves typically break over sand, delivering both left and right breaks. For the best sessions, aim for low to mid tides. If the wind is coming from the west, you’ll find optimal conditions. It’s generally suited for intermediate surfers who can handle the often challenging paddle out, especially when currents pick up around the groynes.

One thing to note is that the surf here can sometimes pack a punch, especially in winter. You’ll find yourself facing strong waves and potentially tricky rip currents near the groynes. However, the chance of a good session is worth it, so be prepared for a workout both paddling out and riding the waves.
