Overview
Harvey Cedars is one of the heavy beachbreaks strung along Long Beach Island, on the stretch that runs from Barnegat Lighthouse State Park through Loveladies down to Northbeach. It breaks over sand, and a line of groynes along roughly 4 mi (6.5 km) of beach helps shape sand-dredging, wide-open barrels. Be ready for a punishing paddle-out, especially in winter.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with northeast swell the best match. A solid NE or SE swell comes out of deep water and slams the bar at lower tides, throwing both lefts and rights. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it's a consistent spot, so there's usually something to ride.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. The beachbreak favors lower water, working through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and the main thing to respect is the raw power of the surf, along with the rips that set up around the groynes. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, though there's almost always another jetty just as good up or down the beach if you want more room.
Access
There are restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand. Parking is free and roadside, but it's restricted, so mind the local rules.
