Overview
Hatsugyokou is a reef break that peels both left and right over a bottom of boulders and sand. The lineup is scattered with random boulders, so it helps to know where they sit before you paddle out.
When It Works
The reef picks up swell from northwest through northeast, and northwest (NW) is the optimal direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is moderately consistent, so rideable days show up without it turning on every session.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. On average days it grooms the rights, which tend to run a little weak, but when the swell is really pumping the left opens into a longer ride. It surfs on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call, and it's worth watching for backwash on a full tide.

This is an intermediate-friendly wave. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
