Haulover is a sand-bottomed beachbreak serving up both lefts and rights, with the best sandbars forming around the jetties and the pier. It's one of the more dependable options along a stretch where the beachbreaks turn marginal heading south into Miami, which is why many Lauderdale surfers make the drive here for waves.
When It Works
The break picks up swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), and it's at its best on a northeast swell. It also takes N/NE swells and SE windchop. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency can be hit or miss across the Lauderdale area, so expect worthwhile windows rather than steady surf.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean it up. The sandbars around the jetties and pier favor the lower end of the tide, and while it can break across low, mid, and high, a rising tide is generally the better call.

The waves here are approachable enough for beginners. Haulover stays busy, so expect a crowded lineup whenever it's working.
