Overview
Hell's Gate is a powerful, shallow right-hander that breaks about 1 km offshore in front of the Point Moore lighthouse at Geraldton, over an uneven reef. Geraldton is the crayfish capital of the world, and many of the local crayfishermen are surfers who need serious paddling power to reach the reefs sitting 20 minutes offshore. Getting out to Hell's Gate takes that same commitment.
When It Works
The wave is a right that breaks on all tides and draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) the best direction. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it's moderately consistent, so the good windows come around when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. The reef breaks through low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave, and it draws a moderately busy lineup when it's on. Currents, sharks, and a tight local crew are all reasons to weigh it up carefully before paddling out. Inside, closer to the point, a short wedgy left called Explosives comes to life in the afternoon southerlies and is a favourite with bodyboarders.
Access
There's a car park with free parking.
