Hickory Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Hickory Bay is the most consistent beachbreak on this stretch of the peninsula, breaking over sand and earning a solid reputation among the local waves. Good lefts wedge up in the north corner near the cliffs, throwing heavy, hollow walls. Those inside sections come with punishing paddle-outs once it gets overhead, a common theme along this coast.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), and it faces into a wide window, which is a big part of why it stays so reliable. Southeast (SE) swell is the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and both lefts and rights come through. With its consistent rating, it's worth checking whenever there's swell about.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers, though the heavy walls and tough paddle-outs make it a serious proposition once the size picks up. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet, so you won't often be jostling for waves.

Access

Getting in takes some effort. From Christchurch, head toward Akaroa on State Highway 75, turn left at the Takamatua Road hill and climb Long Bay Road to the Summit Road, then take the second left onto the gravel Hickory Bay Road. It's shingle, narrow, winding and bumpy, so take it easy on the way down. At the bottom there's a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking, and from there it's a 10-15 minute walk through a farm track and gates to the beach. Follow the signs and steer clear of the farmer's driveway. There are no facilities, no toilets, and no camping or fires, so come prepared and pack out everything you bring in. If you want smaller, empty conditions, nearby Goughs Bay is worth a look.
