Overview
Honky's is a left-hand reef break on Thamburudhoo island, breaking over dead coral. Together with Sultan's on the other side of the island, it forms one of the Maldives' dream setups of rights and lefts. The wave sets up along a nicely walled outside section, then gets bigger and faster as it hits the inside "Fred's Ledge," where it can throw short barrels with a bit more punch than most breaks around.
When It Works
Honky's draws swell from southeast through south (SE-S), with southeast (SE) the best match. It stays rideable across a wide window, working from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is moderate, so you'll find plenty of workable days without it turning on every time you check.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind, the typical winter direction here. The reef works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. As the tide drains out, the inside section throws shorter, punchier barrels.
Local Tips
Honky's suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Thamburudhoo island still belongs to the army, so the break is reached by dhoni only.
