Honolii Point Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Honolii Point sits on the Big Island's east coast just north of Hilo, a reliable rivermouth break also known as Honoli'i Beach Park. It serves up lefts and rights that break over boulders, with a fun lefthander peeling off the point on the north side of the rivermouth. When a sizable swell lines up on a lower tide, the walls can turn hollow and powerful. Because it's a rivermouth, the bottom shifts as boulders move with the flow, and water quality dips after heavy rain, though it's usually fine.

When It Works

Honolii draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), and it comes into its own on a northeast (NE) swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, holding size from head high up to twice overhead. Autumn through spring is the window, with winter the standout when North Pacific swells are at their most powerful, and hurricane swells can light it up too. It breaks year-round but is only moderately consistent.

Wind and Tide

The wind you want is calm or offshore from a westerly direction, ideally southwest (SW). Steady easterly tradewinds and tradeswell run all year and often bring breezy onshores, so watch for it to fire when a prefrontal wind clocking from south to west meets a solid north to northeast groundswell. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, while lower tides bring out the size and shape.

Local Tips

The walls are fast but stay manageable, making this an intermediate-friendly wave that takes a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs and bodyboards. The lineup is usually moderate but fills in when a quality swell arrives, and the atmosphere can feel reserved, so humility and respect go a long way. Mind the reef and boulder bottom, and note that currents can get strong, especially off the point.

Access

Getting in is easy, with a car park at Honoli'i Beach Park plus restrooms and showers.
