Iceland surf guide

Iceland is a surf spot that really stands out with its dramatic landscape and powerful waves. Located on Pototogat Island, this spot attracts surfers who are looking for a serious challenge. With its rugged reefs and shifting conditions, it’s a place where you need to be on your game, especially if you're an expert surfer looking to test your skills.

The waves here break over live coral, producing powerful left and right-handers. The best swell direction is SouthWest, but you can also catch good waves from South and West swells. It handles swell sizes starting from about 2ft (0.6 meters) up to much larger sizes, making it a versatile spot for varying conditions. Expect moody and cavernous barrels when the medium to large SW-W swells kick in. When the conditions are right, and everywhere else is flat, you can find some smaller, rippable left walls as well as some rights, but be aware that getting caught out can lead to a tough wipeout—there's no clear channel, so be ready to navigate the reef. To make the most of your session, aim for NE-E winds, with low, mid, or high tides being preferable.

If you find yourself at Iceland, make sure you're prepared for some serious surfing. It's not for the faint-hearted, but for competent surfers, it offers unique opportunities to ride some standout waves. Just keep an eye on conditions and be ready to adapt to the changing nature of the reef breaks.
