Indian River Inlet Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Indian River Inlet is a sand-bottomed beach and jetty setup that breaks both left and right, peeling off either side of the inlet. On its day it produces genuinely high-performance surf, even barreling tube rides, and it often turns on when other spots are closing out on bigger swells. When that happens it becomes an intense shorebreak: any hint of swell jacks up off the rock wall into a steep, sudden drop, frequently over water that is barely more than ankle-deep. That combination causes plenty of neck and back injuries here every year, so treat the takeoff with respect.

When It Works

The spot draws swell from northeast through southeast and works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly chest-high to overhead. Autumn is the prime window, when storm activity lights it up. It is a decent spot on the right day, and it shines most when bigger swells have shut down the surrounding beaches.

Wind and Tide

Look for offshore wind from the west-southwest (WSW), with a workable wind window running from southwest to west-northwest. It favors low to mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Indian River Inlet suits intermediate to expert surfers, and just about any board works here, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, bodyboards, skimboards, and even bodysurfing. Expect a busy lineup, and the atmosphere can feel a little reserved. Keep an eye out for heavy deep-water fishing along the inlet.

Access

Beach access runs $4 for Delaware-registered vehicles and $8 for out-of-state vehicles.
