Overview
Indian River Southside is one of the heaviest waves in the Delaware and Maryland area, hefty enough to have snapped a board or two. This sandy beach break throws longer rights and short lefts, with walls and quick, thick barrels on offer. It's a firm bodyboarder favorite.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast (NE) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Consistency runs a bit lower than other local spots, so it pays to catch it on the right window.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a crowded lineup when it's on, with plenty of bodyboarders in the mix. When the surf jumps in size, keep an eye out for rips. Through summer, sea-lice can be a nuisance.
Access
There's a car park with both free and paid parking. Facilities include restrooms, showers, camping, and a lifeguard on hand.
