Inubosaki Lighthouse Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Inubosaki Lighthouse sits at the northern end of the Chiba peninsula, beside the large fishing town of Choshi. A handful of scrappy beach and reefbreaks wrap around the east-facing lighthouse, breaking over uneven reef and sand and peeling both left and right. It is worth knowing before you go that the water here is often brown, and industrial waste frequently pollutes the beach, so the waves are rarely what you would call clean.

When It Works

The break picks up swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with an east swell the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft and tends to be moderately consistent, and the reefbreaks around the lighthouse come into their own in low swell and light wind. Further along the clifftop coast road towards Iioka, a more powerful beachbreak can throw barrels when a south swell meets north winds.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west offshore wind. The spot works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it works. Just to the south, the bay at Kimigahama draws a moderate crowd, with some mellow rollers running around the point towards the harbour.

Access

Access is limited to a few points off the clifftop coast road towards Iioka. There is a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking.
