Itacoatiara Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Itacoatiara is one of the heavier, hollower beachbreaks in Brazil, breaking over sand and detonating on shallow, challenging bars. Getting there means crossing the Bahia de Guanabara on the 14 km (9 mi) Niterói bridge, which can even throw up a few waves of its own in storm swells. The beach holds several distinct peaks: Pampo at the west end fires good rights, Meio lurches hard through the middle, and Costão turns out east-southeast lefts. On the southern headland there's an urchin-covered right-hand reef that the bodyboarders tend to dominate.

When It Works

The break draws swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), and it really comes alive on south swells that jack up on the shallow sandbars. Southwest (SW) is the optimal direction, and Pampo in particular tends to come good on a southwest swell. It's a consistent spot, usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.

Wind and Tide

Look for a north (N) offshore wind. Itacoatiara can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, so a north wind on a pushing tide is usually the go.

Local Tips

Itacoatiara suits intermediate surfers, though the heaviest, hollow days and steep air-drops are best left to experienced, fleet-footed surfers. If you're just starting out, nearby Praias Piratininga and Camboinhas are the friendlier option. Expect a very busy lineup when it's on.

Access

There are restrooms and a lifeguard on hand. For parking you'll find a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options.
