Overview
Iztapa is a sand-bottom right-hander that breaks alongside the jetties of a fishing port. The jetties pile sand up on the east side, which sets up longer, hollower waves when a chunkier southwest swell rolls in. Extra peaks form between the jetties, giving you a more sheltered option once the swell gets bigger. It all hinges on the sand, though: when the banks are in it can be very good, and when they are not it turns into close-out city.
When It Works
The spot pulls in swell from the southwest through southeast, with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and handles some size when it comes up. Expect moderately consistent conditions, with the quality tied closely to how the sandbanks are sitting.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind. Iztapa needs the tide up, working on mid and high tide with a rising tide generally the better call. Rips are guaranteed here, so plan your paddle and your exit around them.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet. Keep in mind that the river can bring serious pollution after rains, so it is worth checking recent weather before you paddle out.
