Overview
Jensen Beach is an often-overlooked stretch of the Treasure Coast, tucked between the better-known Stuart Rocks and Walton Rocks. A combination sand-and-rock bottom gives it more range than most, soaking up powerful groundswells and playful windswells alike. It is also one of the few South Florida beachbreaks that can turn ugly windchop into something rideable.
When It Works
The break draws swell from north-northeast to east-northeast (NNE-ENE) and lines up best on a northeast (NE) angle. It is usable across a wide span of sizes, working from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and the season runs through autumn and winter. For the Treasure Coast it is fairly reliable, but nothing lasts long here, so paddle out while it is on rather than waiting for a set that may not come back. It rates as a below-average beachbreak overall, yet it holds its own between its two rocky neighbors.
Wind and Tide
Look for west-southwest (WSW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from south-southwest to west-northwest (SSW-WNW). It breaks through low and mid tide, and a rising tide is the better call, especially when the swell is big enough to break on the outside coquina reef.
Local Tips
Jensen Beach suits beginners and intermediates and takes just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, with an easygoing feel and little of the territorial edge found elsewhere on the coast. If it is rideable, it gets ridden.
Access
Parking is free and easy. Keep the usual local hazards in mind, including sharks, rocks, and lightning. Water quality here is dependable, having historically passed testing at least 95 percent of the time.
