Jones Beach State Park Surf Forecast Guide

Jones Beach State Park is a long, sandy beach break tucked into the 10 miles (16 km) of unstabilized shoreline running from Fire Island Inlet down to Jones Beach. On the right day, that open sand throws up some decent banks with both lefts and rights on offer. If you want the most reliable setup, the Gilgo area tends to be the most consistent stretch.

When It Works

The banks here draw swell from east to south (E-S), and a southeast (SE) swell is the best match for lining up the sandbars. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there is a wide window between too small and too big to find something rideable. Consistency is middling, but when the sand cooperates the peaks can be worth the search.

Wind and Tide

Look for a north (N) offshore wind to clean things up. The banks come alive on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Skip high tide altogether, since it deepens the trough between the outside and inside banks and drowns out the shape.

Local Tips

With gentle, sandy peaks, this is a friendly place for beginners to find their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and if you want cleaner peaks to yourself, walking down the beach is the surest way to leave the crowds behind.

Access

Large car parks make it easy to reach the sand at the main access points, and parking is paid. You will find restrooms, showers, and lifeguards on hand, though facilities can be spread far apart, so plan around the long distances between them.
