Josiah's Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Josiah's Bay is a wide sand beach tucked into the north-facing coast of Tortola, with A-frame peaks scattered along its length. The waves are slopey and often on the weak side, which makes it a forgiving place to learn, and it sits slightly off the beaten track. When the sand, tide, and wind all line up, though, Josiah's can still throw the occasional beachbreak barrel.

When It Works

The bay reads best on a north swell, working across a window from northwest to northeast. It breaks over sand into both lefts and rights, and the shape of the sandbanks decides how good it gets, so there's usually something rideable on a small day. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, but once it pushes past about 1.5 m the peaks lose definition and the paddle-outs turn into hard work. Consistency is moderate and the wave quality is modest, yet autumn and winter bring the most reliable surf, with late fall through early spring the steadiest stretch and late summer and fall adding the odd tropical cyclone swell.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northeast offshore wind to clean it up. It surfs best from mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner's beach at heart, ideally suited to learning and longboarding, though it happily takes everything from shortboards and funboards to fish and bodyboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, and a local surf school runs sessions here, so the main thing to watch for is dodging other beginners.
